On Wednesday June 26th at Douglas Infiniti in Summit NJ, invited attendees were given a hotly anticipated sneak peek at the 2014 Infiniti Q50. The buzz about this vehicle comes from the simple fact that a luxury sports sedan is now here that frees the driver from compromise. Here’s a brief overlook at some of the reasons that make this possible:
1–Styling– It’s low, wide aggressive front, wave-inspired hood, fluid lines and muscular fender give it an exterior styling fit for any serious sports sedan enthusiast. The Q50 cabin is quiet, spacious and refined. An amazing cabin feature is the sport seats. They are wider surfaced seats with memory type foam that takes pressure off the pelvic bone with thigh supports. For anyone with back issues driving an automobile, this feature alone makes the Q50 worth a test drive. Another high grade for the Q50 is the ample rear seat room which makes the entry and egress of this sedan rather easy. The icing on the Q50 cake is that it also has rear fold down seats!
2- Technology– Infiniti has unleashed the Infiniti InTouch system which utilizes dual touchscreen displays. There are also numerous apps that come pre-loaded into the system, and a new i-Key feature allows each key to recognize up to four different driving profiles. Utilizing Advanced Staging Technology, Bose in conjunction with Infiniti has created a 14 speaker symphony on wheels. One of the two new technologies available in the Q50 is Direct Adaptive Steering. Signals are sent down to two actuators down by the wheels to make steering immediate and precise. The second new technology available is Active Lane Control. It utilizes the combination of a Hi-Def camera and configuring all four corners of the vehicle with radar. This allows the Q50 to read the road ahead of you and stop you from drifting outside your driving lane by keeping you in the center of your lane.
3- Performance- This Q50’s available engines are a gas-powered 3.7-liter V6 producing 328-horsepower or a 3.5-liter Hybrid engine that produces a net 354 horsepower. An eye-opening fact about the Q50 Hybrid is that it will go 0-60 in under 5 seconds. Both engines are paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission that provides exceptional shifting. Part of that sublime shifting prowess is due to Infiniti’s Adaptive Shift Logic, which learns your type of driving. Both the Q50 gas engine and the Q50 Hybrid have the option of rear-wheel drive or Intelligent All-Wheel Drive.
While it’s nice to get the 411 about a vehicle, there is definitely a lot of truth to the adage “seeing is believing.” In the photos above, there were many Q50 converts that evening at Douglas Infiniti. Starting with their 2014 models, Infiniti will have model names begin with the letter Q followed by a two digit number. All SUV’s and crossovers with have a QX followed by a two digit number. The number following Q or QX denotes where the model exists in the Infiniti hierarchy.
The sedans, coupes and convertibles:
- The Infiniti G sports sedan will be replaced by the Infiniti Q50
- The Infiniti G coupe and convertible will be called the Infiniti Q60
- The Infiniti M will become the Infiniti Q70
The SUVs and crossovers:
- The Infiniti EX will be known as the Infiniti QX50
- The Infiniti JX will become the Infiniti QX60
- The Infiniti FX becomes the Infiniti QX70
- The Infiniti QX will be called the Infiniti QX80
Some of you may be wondering about the genesis of the new naming. Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen said it comes from a need for simplicity and consistency across the lineup. He also goes on to say that “Q captured the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models, as well as emphasizing our performance credentials while harking back to our heritage with the Q45— Infiniti’s first iconic flagship product in 1989.”
For those curious about the “x” designation in the past Infiniti models indicating AWD, Infiniti President Nysschen states, “we won’t call all-wheel drive models Q50X or QX50X. The fact that a model may feature four wheel drive, will be indicated by specific badging describing this feature on the car, and is not part of the model name.”
The first model to make it’s way to the world is the Infiniti Q50, the exciting sports sedan featuring new technology such as Direct Adaptive Steering and Active Lane Control. This model should be hitting the showroom floor this Summer of 2013.

When I sat down to talk to Douglas Infiniti Parts Manager Mike Feeley, the conversation didn’t go exactly as I had planned. Mike is always jovial, laughing and keeping everyone on their toes at work. Being an Irish person myself, I’m quite accustomed to being around the Irish wit on a regular basis. However, Mike was reluctant to speak and begrudgingly finally agreed to talk. As I thought about it afterwards, his attitude towards being interviewed actually made a lot of sense. While we all briefly see him at Douglas Infiniti as he passes by with a funny line, 99% of the time he usually quietly goes about his business. Whether it’s at the crack of dawn in the Winter to plow the driveway, at midnight to get paperwork done or on the weekend to help fulfill an order, behind the scenes Mike is a tireless worker who doesn’t look to bring attention to himself.
He started with the ownership at Douglas Auto Group back in 1978 as a Parts Clerk when it was PACE Buick. In 1983, Mike was promoted to Parts Wholesale Manager. When Douglas Infiniti started in 1989, he was again promoted to Douglas Infiniti Parts Manager, a title he holds until this day. As I mentioned earlier about Mike keeping to himself, he surprisingly told me that he too is a fellow Summit resident like myself. He met his wife while he was working as a mechanics apprentice at the old Colonial Pontiac in Summit. After work, he would venture over to Natale’s Bakery to eat and strike up a conversation with his future wife. Mike and his wife ended up raising all three of their sons here in Summit.
The non-stop work ethic of Mike Feeley is always perpetuating itself at Douglas Infiniti. When you usually encounter Mike, he normally has multiple phones in his hands as he juggles several conversations at once. From mechanics, to wholesale outlets, to body repair facilities to Douglas retail customers, he’s always got a device glued to his ear trying to help someone out. As Mike says, “there’s always a deadline to meet and a part to be promised.” Due to the heavy demand for Infiniti parts and his impeccable customer service, Mike has led Douglas Infiniti to be the #9 ranked Infiniti Parts Wholesaler along the Eastern Seaboard.
While Mike Feeley fits the Irish proverb, “you can always tell an Irishman but you can’t tell him much”, you can count on two things from him: if you’re a co-worker, he’ll always look to make you laugh and as a customer you will not find someone else who will work harder behind the scenes to deliver on a promised part. These attributes are what has made Mike an indispensable part of the “Douglas Difference” for many years.
